Supporting Artisans' livelihood

There is just something special and unique about products created by artisans, and in our case Indian artisans. By choosing to work with them, Indee Soul wants to make a positive impact in their lives and for the well-being of their families.

Why do we choose to work only with artisans from rural areas?

In a world where mass production and fast fashion is so widespread, we often tend to forget the impact it has. Not just on the environment but also on the lives of Indian artisans living in rural areas. They have increasingly struggled to survive. Many of them find it a challenge to keep up with industrialised standards of the modern world and struggle to find where they fit in and find the right avenues for their crafts. On top of that, social issues such as working conditions, lack of education, exploitation by middlemen, and difficulty to connect with the modern market are just a few challenges that they face. Most struggle to earn a living wage from their handworked craft, with many artisans forced to give up heritage skills that may have been in their family for generations.

What positive impact do brands like Indee Soul have on these artisans' lives?

Like a few others, Indee Soul also strives to motivate artisan communities and their following generations to keep their craft alive and pass on their knowledge. We do this by creating awareness in the markets about the importance of handmade products - their worth and what makes them so special. Also with a fair and adequate payment, the weavers and artisans can live and work in their own homes and still taking care for their family. There is no need to relocate to a different city or long-distance commuting to their jobs in factories. Our artisans can send their children to school close by and provide them with education and further opportunities in life. The artisans physical and mental health is more protected in a “working from home environment”, they work with harmless organic materials and colours while they can use their creative potential to produce unique products – they remain independent and stay together with their families as well as like-minded people in the community.

We are just starting with many more ideas and there are many more communities we wish to partner with. Please join us on our journey …
